Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts
For those of you that watch CBS Sunday Morning on a regular basis, we saw in heart-wrenching detail today, the aftermath of last week’s Hurricane Harvey and the destruction and devastation the storms brought to south Texas and Louisiana. As has been Escondido Rotary Club’s tradition for more years than I have been a member, we respond with generosity when asked to support disaster relief efforts. It’s what Rotarians do.
We began our efforts last Tuesday at club and will continue through Tuesday, September 12 collecting monetary donations. The funds will be sent to Rotary District 5930, that includes the greater Houston area, who has partnered with the McAllen North Rotary Fund, 501 West Nolan Avenue, McAllen, Texas 78504 – Federal Tax ID # 27-3855943. Rotary International has sent this request around the world to clubs asking how they can help.
Unique to our club is how we support The Rotary Foundation at the same time.
Although ALL donation amounts by check and credit card are welcome, anyone giving $100 or more to The Rotary Foundation, will have an equal amount of club funds sent to Texas specifically for disaster relief. Our goal is $5000 – to The Rotary Foundation, and an equal amount to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts by Rotarians on the ground who know the greatest and most immediate unmet needs.
In addition, donations to The Rotary Foundation of $100 or more will be matched by points (accrued from previous giving of the club and other members). So, say if you are $400 away from your Paul Harris Fellow or the next level PHF, you could donate $200, we would match it with 200 points, and the club would give $200 to Hurricane Harvey relief. Not sure where you stand with giving? You always have access at rotary.org at My Rotary, but Mary Geerdes and Christine Montan can also look up your report and tell you. New to the club? Start your charitable giving to The Rotary Foundation with $100 that will be matched in two ways!
With 45 reported dead, many hundreds injured, more than 65,000 homes lost, with another 86,000 damaged badly and over 100,000 in Houston shelters, our donations will make a difference! Rotarians are People In Action and we can make this year’s international theme a reality by our actions – Making a Difference.
Please give generously! Make checks out to The Rotary Foundation, bring them in Tuesday, and we’ll take it from there. Know friends or family who want to help? Bring their checks too.
